Last night NBC’s new travel reality series “Great American Road Trip” kicked off. The series features seven families as they travel along the historic Route 66. This post is a roundup of all the places the families went during the episode along with links to more information about the destinations.

Wrigley Field (Chicago, IL): The teams started off at the home of baseball’s Chicago Cubs. You can find more information about the stadium here.

Sears Tower (Chicago, IL): Along the way to their first rest stop, the teams saw the 108-story Sears Tower, which will soon be renamed Willis Tower.

Illinois State Fairgrounds (Springfield, IL): The teams spent their first night on the grounds of the state fair. This year’s fair runs from August 14-23, 2009.

Lincoln Home (Springfield, IL): The first challenge took place near the home of Abraham Lincoln. You can get more information about the historic site on the National Park Service’s web site. There you can take a virtual tour and find admission prices and info.

The Old Chain of Rocks Bridge (Border of Illinois and Missouri): The Coote Family’s reward took place at this historic bridge that starts in Madison, Illinois and ends in St. Louis, Missouri. The bridge doesn’t have a web page but you can check out this Wikipedia article for more information on it.

Gateway Arch (St. Louis, Missouri): The elimination challenge took place near the most famous St. Louis landmark. The challenge involved zorbing, which usually involves riding inside a ball as it goes down a hill. There aren’t any zorbing locations near the arch but Pigeon Force, Tennessee offers the only real zorb site in the whole country.

There are more zorbing sites in the USA than Tennessee. Go to http://www.theogo.com which is the website of the INVENTORS of zorbing – they have sites where you can do the activity in Pennsylvania and Massachusetts.
